App Of The Day!

stringwire

So, a member of iPhone Antidote happened to be out of the country when the Giants won the World Series (sucks to be him). He’s a HUGE giants fan and whilst he was able to work it out to watch the game, with some beers in hand, once the Giants had won he was itching to be back in San Francisco to enjoy the party afterwards.

Now, that wasn’t going to happen, because they don’t make planes that fast (yet) BUT he was able to get the next best thing, watching the party from afar, and that was through a free online social media live streaming video App called Stringwire.

On Stringwire, there was a girl live-streaming video from her phone, following the party throughout  San Francisco, interacting with some people, purely watching others, and it was pretty great.

It’s is a new service from NBCUniversal Media which allows you to “Stream in your world real-time with live video from anywhere to audiences everywhere”. You can use it to stream breaking news (slightly controversial) or just what happens in your living room OR you can watch what other people are streaming, be it their sick surf break or the Giants World Series Win after party in downtown San Fransisco.

You can get it free from the app store! Once you have created an account in the App, you can also log in online here.

Go forth and STREAM!

Tim Cook’s Bloomberg essay.

exclamation mark

You might have heard that a couple of days ago, Tim Cook, CEO over at Apple, had an essay published in the latest edition of Bloomberg Businessweek. You might not. Either way, you should probably read it when you can.

In the article, Tim Cook publicly opens up about his life as a gay man. It’s something that’s never been a real secret, but also something that’s never been publicly stated, because up until now Cook has kept his private life pretty separate from Apple.

What spurred this public statement is an admirable attempt at tackling discrimination in the workplace, beginning from within Apple. Cook has put aside his desire for privacy to prioritize instead his need for providing a workplace where equality isn’t an issue, be it gender, race or sexuality equality.

Cook believes that equality in the workplace is an important issue everyone should be prioritizing, and that the ability to make a workplace better is a gift anyone who finds themselves in a position to provide, should.

It’s a great read. Check it out here: http://www.businessweek.com/articles/2014-10-30/tim-cook-im-proud-to-be-gay

Black Friday SEASON is here!

currency_dollar green

So we just had Halloween, and crazy (festive) people are already putting Christmas decorations up BUT we have Thanksgiving first, and we also have that most commercial and highly controversial shopping holiday that is Black Friday. Shoppers love it, retail workers and their families… not so much.

This year, Walmart and Amazon have started their countdown to Black Friday early with discounts having already begun on November the 1st! They’ve told their customers that they’ll be cutting prices on TWENTY THOUSAND items over the next month leading up to Black Friday including a special cyber event on November 3rd.

Amazon also began their lead up to Black Friday on Saturday with the addition of special ‘Countdown to Black Friday Featured Deals’.

Black Friday falls on November 28th, with a lot of stores opening for 24 hours beginning on Thanksgiving. Some people believe that in the name of giving customers good holiday season bargains, stores are purely looking for maximum profit and taking retail workers away from their families on a very family-centric holiday. Macy’s and Kohls have just announced that they both will be opening at 6pm on Thankgiving, which is two hours earlier than last year.

Whatever you think about Black Friday, it doesn’t look like it’s going to be going away or dying down any time soon, in fact the opposite appears to be happening. Try and get the best deals out of it that you can whilst complying with your morals, and you’ll be doing great!

Remember: it’s never too early to get presents! Because presents rock.

Tip of the Week.

Did you know that you can try using your headphones as a microphone in a pinch? Yes sir you can!

If the mic on your laptop is broken or if you need to record something desperately on another device but are not tooo concerned about the quality (something to do with a bet we can imagine as a fine example) then you can use your earbud headphones as a make-do microphone. It doesn’t always work, but there’s a high percentage chance that it will.

Because of science, you see.

Plug the headphones in, his record, talk into the earpiece and WHAMMO!  It will probably record (in bad quality.)

Still a good tip.
