Get free cell phone service! Right now!

currency_dollar green

How do you guys feel about free cell phone service? Do you feel good about it? Yeah? Read on fools!

Ringplus has an eggzellent deal on right now – pay $12 upfront, buy a special SIM card (unless you have a Sprint cell phone) and you get a no-contract cell phone service that allows you 1200 real cellular minutes, 1200 texts, and 1200 MB of LTE data per month, plus tethering.

For free. All of it. Free!

It’s called the Leonardo 3 Free plan and there’s a couple of very, very minor catches. Numero uno – when you call someone, instead of hearing the dial-tone, you’ll hear ads. Let some wheelers and dealers bend your ear for however long it takes you friend to pick up.

Before you sign up, you’ll also need to take a short survey and link your Twitter, Facebook or LinkedIn account. If you don’t currently have one of those, you can add it within 3 weeks after sign up.

As we said, you’ll need a special SIM unless you already have a Sprint cell phone.

You can buy a SIM from RingPlus here for $15. According to reports, you can also go into an Apple store and ask for a Sprint SIM to fit into your phone and they’ll give you one for free.

If you’re an iPhone guy or gal, you’ll need an unlocked or Verizon iPhone 5C or above. Alternatively, you can check out some sweet $40 phones that will work with the service, like the Sprint Prepaid – Motorola Moto E 4G with 8GB Memory or the VM 1GB Nokia Lumia 635 4G, both currently on sale at Best Buy.

The initial $12 payment is for overage, and if your Top-Up balance reaches $0, another $12 auto Top Up will be automatically charged to your credit card on file.

The service uses the Sprint network, so if  you know that it’s sketchy in your area, you should take that into consideration.

The deal is available Tuesday December 8, 2015 from 12 Noon PST until Thursday December 10, 2015 at 12 Noon PST.

Go get it!

Get Gmail’s new feature!

exclamation mark

Answering all of our email specific prayers, Gmail has just rolled out a new feature that will prevent all kinds of brain fart mix ups. Yup, we’re talking about the ‘undo send’ feature. Yess.

If you’re a Gmailer – go to settings, click “General,” and check the box that says “Undo Send.” When you do find the need for the feature, you’ll still have to act quick, with the choice of four time frames – five, 10, 20, and 30 seconds – before the undo send is no longer feasible.

This feature is currently only available on the web version of Gmail.

iPhone balloon case

Need a phone case real quick? No, we can’t think of why you would either, but hey, life’s weird, so better to be prepared, right? Right!

Now, you have your trusty balloon handy, right? Of course!

Inflate that sucker, place your phone on top, slowly deflate the balloon, and Voila! Nifty emergency iPhone case.

Watch below.

How to set up and use your Apple Watch!

apple watch

Did you get a shiny new Apple Watch today?  HERE’S HOW TO USE IT!!

First things first: Make sure you have an iPhone 5, 5s, 5c, 6, or 6 Plus running iOS 8.2.

Secondly things secondly: Your watch should come with about 50% charge, but charge your watch if it needs it.

Power on the Watch by pressing the side button, and follow the prompts to select a language etc. Launch the Apple Watch App on your iPhone (it was automatically installed when you updated to iOS 8.2) and Tap “Start Pairing” on the main screen. Hold your watch up to your iPhone’s camera so the screen is aligned with the yellow outlined box on your iPhone’s screen, and follow the instructions on your iPhone screen.

If you open the Settings App on your shiny new watch, you’ll find the options to customize your brightness, sound, text size, silencing ability, and Do Not Disturb functions.

IMG_6730

Your new best friend is the Digital Crown. Tap it to get back to the home screen, use it to zoom in maps/photos, press it in conjunction with the side button to take a screen shot, press and hold to activate Siri, and double click it to jump to your most recently visited app.

Your second best friend forever is the SWIPE! YES! Swipe up from the watch face to see what Apple calls ‘Glances’ which contains information such as calendar events, weather, heart rate, location, and the ability to access the option to ‘Ping’ your misplaced phone.

Swipe down to see your notifications. Swipe left on a notification to quickly clear it. Check your heartbeat by swiping up to expand Glances and swiping left to the heartbeat card.

Tapping is the cool guy you thought you knew that has a surprise twin brother that seems pretty cool. The Watch is pressure sensitive, so light tapping will have a different effect than if you ‘force touch’ – a slightly longer, firm press.

There are a number of uses for the force touch that become more apparent the more you play with the device. For instance in the maps app, you force touch to get to the search feature. Force touch the watch face to change its design, or on the notifications ‘red dot’ to clear them all, or on the Messages inbox to compose a new text.

IMG_6727

In Glances, tap to get more information on any of the applications.

Raising your hand will activate the display and show you the time, the last notification if you’ve received one, or activate Siri if you say “Hey Siri” at the same time. Lowering your wrist after receiving a notification will dismiss it. Putting your hand over the watch face will silence an incoming phone call.

You can also use it to control Apple TV, which could be useful, and also could be super annoying to anyone else in the room (which, yes, can be excellent).

To use Apple Pay, double click the side button and hold the face of the watch near the card reader. POOF, MONEY EXCHANGED!

We’ll be bringing you more Apple Watch updates and user guides as we get to know more about the device, and in the mean time, you should also check out the Apple video guides here.

Celebrity nude photo hacks being investigated by Apple.

overview_icon

Unless you’re living under a rock, or some other no-media penetrated secluded villa in the south of France, you will have heard about the hundreds of photos leaked onto the internet. Naked photos, specifically, of celebrities purportedly taken from their iCloud accounts and posted on the dark website Tor, before landing on 4Chan and leaking alll over the internet, as something as viral as naked celebrity photos was always destined to do.

Some of the celebrities involved have claimed that the photos are fake, whilst others have been confirmed to be legitimate.

Bad news.

Apple gave a statement to the guys over at Re/code advising that they will be undertaking a full investigation into the matter, which is great. “We take user privacy very seriously and are actively investigating this report,” said Apple spokeswoman Natalie Kerris.

Apple has since today come out with confirmation that the iCloud feature was not breached, instead the hackers were able to access and steal the photos using a targeted attack on user names, passwords and security questions.

From the sauce:

“We wanted to provide an update to our investigation into the theft of photos of certain celebrities. When we learned of the theft, we were outraged and immediately mobilized Apple’s engineers to discover the source. Our customers’ privacy and security are of utmost importance to us. After more than 40 hours of investigation, we have discovered that certain celebrity accounts were compromised by a very targeted attack on user names, passwords and security questions, a practice that has become all too common on the Internet. None of the cases we have investigated has resulted from any breach in any of Apple’s systems including iCloud(R) or Find my iPhone. We are continuing to work with law enforcement to help identify the criminals involved.”

This validates what security experts suggested yesterday – that the hackers were able to get ahold of the photos because of a combination of weak passwords and the lack of two-step verification. Two-step verification is a feature Apple introduced in March last year which requires a security code and a trusted device to log into your iCloud account as well as a password.

Although originally suspected of being used in the hack, it appears that a tool shared a few days ago on Github, a code-sharing website, was not used by the Hackers. This tool would have allowed hackers to repeatedly guess passwords without being locked out of an iCloud or Apple account but was fixed by Apple as of Monday morning. Attempting to use the tool now locks an Apple ID after five attempts to guess a password.

As always, if you’re concerned about your privacy we recommend using strong passwords and making use of the two-step verification.

Strong passwords will include numbers, symbols and a mixture of capitals and lower case letters, and will not create a word or sequence of numbers that can be related to any of your biographical information by anyone but yourself.

To find out more about how to set up two-step verification, visit the Apple support page here.

Tip of the day! Screenshots edition

5314278798_fd1f36a1c7_m

So this is an oldy but such an important goody!! We’re talking SCREENSHOTS PEOPLE!!

So much of our lives are lived on our computers and devices these days (which we are all for, btw, as long as it’s not on the Kim Kardashian App…) and sometimes it’s just NECESSARY WITH CAPITALIZATION to show someone what’s going on in your deviceland. And maybe it’s just us here at iPhone Antidote, but sometimes it’s stupidly hard to remember how to take a screenshot, so here’s what you do:

For your iPad/iPhone: Press the top right hand power button at the same time as the Home button which is in the middle at the bottom of the phone. BAM MAGIC PHOTO SAVED RIGHT INTO YOUR PHOTOS APP

For your Mac: Press and hold the Command button,  the Shift button and the number three button all at the same time. BAM YOUR WHOLE SCREEN IS FROZEN IN TIME AND ACCESSIBLE ON YOUR DESKTOP AS A FILE

For your PC: If you’re using  Microsoft Windows XP,  click the window you want to capture. Press and hold down the Alt key and  the Print Screen key at the same time. BAM YOU”VE GOT A SCREENSHOT ON YOUR PC BUT WHY ARE YOU USING A PC AGAIN?

For your iWatch: Oh wait, that doesn’t exist yet, our bad. Don’t tell anyone we know stuff from the future k? K.
