2020 is here! What to expect from Apple

It’s only just begun!  new decade, a new year, a new raft of Apple releases. So what can we expect from them? iPhone changes are for sure expected – such as 3D sensing rear cameras, 5G technology, and an all-OLED lineup. We’re also looking at updated iPad Pro models, new Macs, Apple Tags, updated HomePod and Apple TV, with some even predicting an augmented reality headset.

During the first half of 2020, there’s a solid chance that Apple will release a new low-cost iPhone that will be sold alongside the iPhone 11, 11 Pro, and Pro Max. The smartphone has been referred to as an iPhone SE 2 but will likely be more similar to an iPhone 8.

If it’s a real thing, it’s said to feature a 4.7-inch display with Touch ID, an A13 chip, a single-lens rear camera, 3GB RAM, and it will be available in silver, red, and space gray colors. For this device, we’re probably looking at around $399.

In the Fall, we’ll see the annual refresh of Apple’s iPhone lineup , with the expectation that they will introduce higher-end 6.1 and 6.7-inch iPhone models alongside lower-end 5.4 and 6.1-inch iPhone models, for a total of four iPhones, all featuring OLED displays. Every new iPhone coming in 2020 is expected to support 5G technology.

We can likely expect the Apple Watch Series 6 to be released, with ( presumably) faster performance, better water resistance, and improved wireless transmission for faster WiFi and cellular speeds. Sleep tracking is also expected to be an added feature to the smartwatch.

As there was no iPad Pro refresh in 2019, rumors suggest a refresh is coming in the first half of this year, with an updated iPad Pro with faster Face ID and a rear-facing time-of-flight (ToF) camera system which can determine the distance between objects by measuring the time it takes a light or laser signal to get from the camera to the subject in each point of the image.

That information is used to create a 3D image of the surrounding area to allow more accurate depth perception and better placement of virtual objects. ( Hi Augmented Reality).

Apple may update the 16-inch MacBook Pro lineup with a new machine that features a mini-LED display, will likely release a 13-inch MacBook Pro with a scissor switch keyboard, and is expected to bring said scissor switch keyboard to the MacBook Air at some point during the year.

At WWDC in June, we can expect the usual updates to software – this year it will be iOS 14, iPadOS 14, watchOS 7, tvOS 14, and macOS 10.16.

New products circling the rumor mill range from ‘Airtags’ – bluetooth tracking devices similar to Tile, to AR Smart Glasses that would be offered alongside the iPhone, with the iPhone handling the bulk of the processor needs and the glasses serving a display role.

Hopefully there’ll be some sweet shinyApple-y surprises coming our way in 2020 as well, but so far it’s looking pretty nice!

Happy New Year!
