Cover Orange

 

 

 

 

One word: Addictive. Essentially a puzzle game with super cute graphics and light bouncy music. The goal is to move different objects in different ways in order to cover one or more poor little orange dudes from the evil rainstorm that kills them. Kinda like fun physics. Kinda.

 

Simple to start, with an impressive number of levels – 400- that gradually gets more and more challenging. Incredibly frustrating when you just can’t work it out, there is also Cover Orange 2 available.

Mushroom Wars

 

 

 

 

This is an iPhone Antidote personal favorite. Just be warned, this might just take over your life- and that of your significant other. This beautifully animated game offers duel functionality, allowing multi level play against the computer and online multiplayer games.

 

You might find yourself yelling at the screen and saying how grossly unfair and stupid the game and everyone you’re playing against is but don’t worry- you’ll be back. Because it’s a really good game. It’s just that it can be really hard, and stuff, ya know?

 

You can play against the computer ad free as much as you like. For the multiplayer option, you get 5 free games that deplete as you play and lose. One game is replaced every hour and you can keep playing as long as you keep winning! If you do that, you move up the ladder. Just a warning, that ladder is hard, man.

Dumb Ways to Die

 

 

 

This game is actually born from an Australian public service announcement campaign by Metro Trains in Melbourne, Australia, to promote rail safety. Which is weird, and cool and all, but it’s also really fun. Try to beat our top score of 3200!

 

The aim of the game is to avoid the dangerous activities that the funny looking cartoon dudes get themselves into throughout the campaign. You get three lives, which you use to do such heroic things as saving a dude  from getting run over by a train, putting mustard on a bun so you can feed it to a snake so it wont eat you, flicking pirahnas away from a dude’s privates as seen above and other such delightful activities!

 

The longer you manage to stay alive the quicker each play gets until it’s all rather frantic. It is free and it includes the capability to tweet your death! Sweet!

Can You Escape

 

 

 

An interesting and perhaps momentarily captivating puzzle game where you must collect and use multiple tools clues to find objects which in turn lets you open locked cabinets and drawers within the room. The objective is to get out of the room and into the elevator, so you can enter and figure out the next room.

 

Extremely frustrating in a good way, it’s the type of game where you find yourself jabbing furiously at the screen. I KNOW these stupid keys go HERE! Until you realize that they don’t, actually go there, and you’re a moron.

Sprinkle

 

 

 

This game was the winner of Best Casual Game in the 2012 International Mobile Gaming Awards so you know it’s gotta be good.

 

Hella cute graphics, and level based gameplay where the aim of the game is to aim your water gun correctly to put out fires before it gets to your little blue guy!

 

You get points for how much time and water it takes you to put the water out. Level up, more fires, more rocks to help or hinder the direction of the water, and more ways to move your giant water gun.

 

If you run out of water, everyone gets sad, or if you don’t get to a house in time before it burns down. Obviously. The game starts off super simple but it gets harder and more addictive as it goes along. You get affectionate with the little guys too.

 

Sprinkle has 46 levels, 22 of them are available from the start, and you can unlock the remaining 24 levels by scoring 5 Drops (stars) on the first 22 levels, or unlock them with an In App Purchase (this unlocks all previous levels as well).

Twisted and pretty, with overpowering graphics that are almost too much to take in, this game is pretty good if you can handle it. You have to match colors of precariously stacked condos to clear them and gain power-ups. Also? Angry monsters surround your condos and try to topple them, unless you feed them the matching color buildings, or clear three of that color.

 

Super Monsters Ate My Condo is actually a free sequel to Monsters Ate My Condo. It adds a time limit for games and boosts that can be activated with in-game currency. This game is highly addictive. Silly Condo eating monsters.

Subway Surfers

 

 

 

 

Another continuous runner game. This time, you’re running through a subway, away from a station guard/inspector, dodging trains, jumping, ducking, and moving left to right. Controls are easy, design is pleasant and colorful and the music is pretty catchy.

 

Throughout the game you can collect coins and earn or purchase game extras and boosts to help you achieve the goals presented to you by the game as well as trying to get as far as you can with as many points. Works best on the iPad, with many different versions out there.

Major Mayhem

 

 

Go to the tropics, stop the dogs of war and save the world from mayhem! Great graphics. Easy to follow instructions. Great music, takes you inside the action.

 

You are given different missions to accomplish for each level. Your guy runs, then there’s ninjas which you have to shoot by tapping on the screen. You also have people you have to rescue- i.e, don’t shoot.  With each mission more controls are slowly introduced, making it more and more difficult.

 

You get awarded with medals when you safely finish the level ‘mission’  and you get mayhem points.

Clayjam

 

ClayJam is another personal favorite.Beautiful claymation art bringing gameplay alive like few others can. And the game itself is fun, and addictive. Across a number of levels, you complete challenges using your one little clay ball. Collect clay through a variety of measures, rolling over a variety of awesomely unique objects and characters.

 

You are up against a red sea of clay follwing you at a quick pace, and objects much bigger than you that you bounce off and lose clay. The clay you have collected by the end you can keep to create further characters and unlock other worlds. Missions help with the addictiveness!

Tonight, we’re wishing on Apps ( cos we’re super fun and cool like that).  Apps have been around for so few years (5.5 to be exact) and yet we just don’t know how we would live our technocratic lives without a lot of them!

6. An app that learns your priorities and then organizes your to-do list accordingly.

 

 

 

 

7. An App that tells you exactly when you would really be missing out on the best time ever by choosing to stay home and watch Diners Drive-Ins and Dives.

 

 

 

 

8. An App so you can communicate with animals.

If you haven’t already snapped up one of these and are wanting to, well, we wish you luck my friend. They are a little scarce on the ground at the moment, but we think that supplies might bulk up towards the pointy end of Christmas. Might.

Just make sure you get the right one, and we’re not telling you which one that is- they are both awesome, but it is a fierce battle forged in people’s minds as to brand alliance, much like Samsung and Apple products. If the person you’re getting it for has no alliance, you’re good to go on what suits the budget and environment.

Our pick from the range of Campus safety apps- a tool which shouldn’t have to be used but stays in the better safe than sorry category of must-download apps. A safety blanket even if never needed. And we hope that is the case!

OnWatch has 6 ‘watch’ modes that stay on your phone when you think you may be at risk or are feeling a little uncertain. From there it’s only two taps to contact friends, 911, campus police or a combination of those. You can also set an alarm for a future time and when that time arrives, you are asked to enter a passcode- If you don’t- the app will send your pre-selected friends a message and your location.
There is currently a 30 day free trial, after that It is $19.99/year or $2.99 per month. Even if you discontinue with the app for whatever reason, the call 911 and call campus police features remain free forever.

 

 

 

 

 

*BenchPrep. This app is essentially a be all, end all tool for study and exam preparation with a huge interactive course library with study features, reports and test preparation materials.
The App includes a massive amount of material for academic subjects from Algebra to Spanish to Biology, Test preparation for those special flowers smart enough to be taking the LSAT GMAT MCAT and a bunch of others, as well as courses on practical subjects such as eMarketing, Accounting, and Word.
An invaluable study tool, as seen by this: Students who learn with Benchmark receive 15% better grades than before they started using the app. 15% better? Not much to lose here, except the fee, which is a $25/month for one course and $99/month for access to all courses.

The best computation and expert knowledge search engine app out there in our opinion- it’s really impressive. Simply ask the app what you want calculated or a question you want the answer to – from complex mathematics to how old a president was when he entered office. $2 or – try out Wolfram Alpha Pro, which goes beyond text input and includes downloadable results. A monthly subscription is $4.99/ month or $2.99/month for students, and for a very short time ending TODAY; you can get the first three months free with an annual subscription.

 

 

 

 

 

*iStudiez Pro is the established and award winning student planner app that will track and summarize in simple and yet extensive detail, your assignments, due dates, schedule for classes, work and extra curricular activities, as well as your grades. It will give you alerts for upcoming exams, classes and assignment due dates and sync with other co-existing apps such as the calendar. Each class has the ability to include your professors contact information with simple tap to connect features to be able to reach them on your mobile. Highly recommended for years, this is one well worth checking out. $2.99 or free for the Lite version.

 

 

 

 

 

For those of you looking for some extra tutorials, or for those of you not going back to school but still looking for some education, we also recommend downloading the iTunes University app. It’s awesome.

 

 

 

 

 

Also, because we totally understand procrastination, there is SelfControl. Not an App, but something that may just change your life…even though you might end up hating us for introducing you to it!
Available only on Mac OS X 10.5 and above, SelfControl is a way to try and curb your Internet based distractions whilst studying. Simply add any website or access to your mail server to your ‘blacklist’ and an amount of time you would like to be blocked from them, and BAM! No more distractions ( on the internet) until that time is up. Restarting or deleting the application from your computer will not make a difference either! Useful and annoying! And FREE!

 

 

Also handy is ratemyprofessors.com, check it out to make your class choices a little more informative. Last but not least, don’t forget that good ‘ol Tinder app… College is all about making friends, right?

Hell is other people- the app that helps you avoid people

 

 

 

 

 

So, we’ve done a review of the lover-ly app that is Tinder, we were planning a review of the similarly themed ‘Bang with friends’ app, however it has been unceremoniously dumped from the Apple App store ( for the time being…).

 

We thought maybe now we should review an app for the people who are not really interested in human interaction, or face-to-face interaction specifically. Cos it be scary. We get that, so this one is for you guys!

 

The app?  ‘Hell is other people’. Got a nice dystopian ring to it doesn’t it? People are calling this an Anti-social app, and as unfriendly as that sounds, we think that it has definite potential in certain circumstances.

 

Here’s how it works.

 

You download the app onto your device. You go out for a quiet Sunday afternoon stroll. Say….say you might not have slept at home last night, say you’re on what some people might call, a ‘walk of shame’. Who you wanna see? Altogether now: No-one.

 

Change the situation to your good self hung over and wearing track pants and not wanting to see that girl/guy, or when you might not be where you’re supposed to be and yet there you are staring at your very unimpressed boss in the bar down the road.

 

Or, imagine you’re just somewhere in the world, you walk into a cafe, and look, there’s that guy that does that weird long silence thing between sentences. Or worse, that chick who does the weird silence thing in the middle of  her sentence, and then you react to their weird half sentence, and then you realize that they hadn’t finished and oh my god just walk away.

 

Here is that magic thing that you’ve been waiting for- a chance to avoid that particular awkward awkwardness.

 

So, is it really magic? Will I never have to have an awkward social interaction ever again?

 

Well, no, sorry kids. The above ( and many more too)  are all situations where the Hell is other People App would come in handy- as long as the people you know and want to avoid in certain situations all use the location based social media app Foursquare. Frequently.

 

If they do, then you’re in luck. The app will track, record and plot your friends most recent check in’s on an ‘avoidance’ map for you, so you know where people are and when they checked in, making it perfect for sneaking around them.

 

The man behind the app, Scott Garner, a student at New York University’s Interactive Telecommunications Programme, says that he hopes to include check in’s from facebook and geo-tagged tweets in the future.

 

This would create an even more comprehensive way to avoid your friends in sticky situations, or just, you know, cos your friends suck.

 

This is not a downloadable app, and you have to me a member of foursquare for it to work. Go to http://hell.j38.net/ to sign up using your foursquare log in information and you can see your ‘Avoidance’ map from there!

WWDC lowdown!

 

Alright guys, so yesterday was THE BIG DAY!

 

The four day annual world wide developers conference for Apple began yesterday morning, kicking off at the Mascone Centre in San Francisco at 10am.

 

As per usual, WWDC began with a perfectly orchestrated keynote speech given by Tim Cook, featuring a few other key Apple guys AND more importantly, featuring some new Apple software and hardware announcements and previews.

 

 

DOUBLE RAINBOW EXCITING!

 

 

For the first time, the keynote was broadcast live from the Apple website and on Apple TV.

 

The two hour address was, as expected, super stylishly presented, with multiple media presentations, some jokes, and a few fantastic and even surprising new Apple products and updates.

 

The top things you should know about that were announced today are:

 

 

– The new Mac Pro. Stellar, revolutionary and round.

 

– iOS 7, the biggest change to iOS since the iPhone came out.

 

– OS  X Mavericks – the new operating system named after a California beach break.

 

– New Macbook airs with super extended battery life.

 

– iTunes Radio – the much talked about radio product that actually sounds better than we expected!
